Pembina River Restoration Project: Enbridge Energy

The Problem:

The 2011 spring floods in North Dakota had eroded as much as 40 to 50 feet of river bank away near the pipeline, thus exposing portions of pipe. Northern Clearing was tasked with re-establishing the river's edge and building a slope with concrete armor, thus to establish and restore the riverbank while protecting the pipeline.

The Solution:

The River's edge needed to be re-established by pioneering a roadway down over the river bank and shaping and constructing the slope for 260 feet along the water's edge. Stone and fill material provided the foundation for protection for the riverbank and the pipeline. Next to be installed was the armor, 8' x 16' sheets of concrete blocks with stainless steel cables running through them, placed one at a time on the slope. Cables and clamps bind them together and anchor them into the riverbank. This 20 day project was completed in 10 days, largely due to an extremely efficient and knowledgeable crew, and the cooperation of the weather.

12 semi loads of concrete armor and 1300 yards of stone and fill material were required to complete this project.
